About Us

Maldwyn Nursery & Family Centre

Philosophy

We at Maldwyn always put the needs of the child first. We get to understand each child who attends the nursery and plan activities to suit their developmental needs and their interests.

We place a large importance on real world learning, letting children explore the world around them. We encourage children to take appropriate risks in their play and to question the world around them. Within the Creative Caterpillars and Messy Monkeys this might be messy play with a new texture or being supported on a balancing item.

With everything we do at Maldwyn we want to ensure that the children are in a fun, safe and an environment which lets them progress to reach their full potential.

Outdoor Areas

We are very lucky in that we have lots of options to get outside all without leaving the nursery.

Our younger children share our decking which is accessible throughout the day as the children are given free choice and equipped with age appropriate toys and equipment or use the area as a track learning to balance on different toys.

The Bright Butterflies have their own decking which they are given free choice over throughout the day. The area encourages creativity with writing opportunities, messy play, water play, construction and gardening all in one area. Soon this area will be transformed into a bigger decking area given even more options for the children.

Our Park

All children including our after school club have access to the large outdoor garden/park. We have put a lot of effort into this area to transform it into something special.

Mandy has worked wonders and turned an empty area into outstanding resource for the babies, involving a sensory path, a grass mound, sandpit and many other things to stimulate their development.

We now have a sensory garden which gives children the chance of all ages to explore many sights smells and textures.

We have a large red slide as the centre piece to the park which has received new netting and a fresh coat of paint.

The park has many different age appropriate climbing equipment giving children the chance to explore their own limits in a safe environment.

We have a dedicated role play area including a mud-kitchen and a play café giving children the chance to work on their communication skills through play and using some of their developing mathematical skills.

Other areas of the park include somewhere children can dig, explore trees build dens and enjoy being outdoors. We have smaller play equipment for the younger members of the nursery. Our dug in tyres provide an excellent resource to get creative with and our mud kitchen produces some outstanding meals. All of this and we still have plenty of open space for children to run and use their imagination.

Committee

We are a committee led organisation.

Our committee consists of valuable members of Newtown Community including business owners, teachers, police officers, childcare professionals, human resources experts and finance experts. Our committee do some fantastic work and allow us as a nursery to thrive.

We are always on the look out for new committee members if it is something you might be interested in please get in touch with management.

COVID 19 Hub

As a nursery we are very proud that we did not close for a single day from 30th March through to 26th June. We were the ONLY nursery in Newtown to remain open during this time and acted as the preschool age hub for the whole of Newtown and surrounding areas.

We rose to the challenge and remained open on weekends and bank holidays to provide care for critical workers in the frontline response against COVID19. We had children from several different local nurseries and welcomed them into the Maldwyn family. The staff who worked provided a caring, nurturing, safe and enjoyable environment for all who attended.

Once more children were allowed to attend nursery by the Welsh Government we increased our staff levels and introduced bubbles allowing more children to return to nursery in a safe environment, while maintaining all of the positive impact nursery life has.

This was an incredible difficult time for everyone across the country and we look back at this period with a sense of pride that we felt we made a difference for a number of critical workers.

Montgomeryshire Community Awards 2021

Due to the work of all the staff in the nursery throughout the pandemic we were nominated for Business of the Year 2021 in the Montgomeryshire Community Awards. We were selected as finalists and were honoured to be nominated alongside some truly outstanding businesses and individuals. We were awarded highly commended by the judging panel. We are all incredibly proud and humbled to have been acknowledged in this way by the community of Montgomery for something which is natural to all Maldwyn staff in doing our best for the children.

FAMLY app

To keep parents/carers informed throughout the day we use the FAMLY app. Each child will have their own profile which contains account information, payments, booked sessions and daily posts.
Daily posts will contain information on the child's day such as nappy changes, sleep times, food and snacks eaten as well as pictures of their day and activities they have joined in with.
You can directly message using the app to either the office or staff in your child's room including their key worker.
